The UK (311K units) constituted the country with the largest volume of aircraft internal combustion engine consumption, accounting for 62% of total volume. Moreover, aircraft internal combustion engine consumption in the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, Mozambique (61K units), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (14K units), with a 2.7% share.

In the UK, aircraft internal combustion engine consumption remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: Mozambique (+2.4% per year) and the United States (+19.3% per year).

In value terms, Mozambique ($4.8B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($2B). It was followed by Oman.

Production

After ten years of growth, production of spark-ignition reciprocating or rotary internal combustion piston engines for aircraft decreased by -2.2% to 799K units in 2022. In general, production, however, showed a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 3%. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak volume at 817K units in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, aircraft internal combustion engine production contracted to $15B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $16.8B, and then contracted in the following year.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were the UK (312K units), Saudi Arabia (296K units) and Mozambique (61K units), together accounting for 84% of global production. Thailand, Oman and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.5%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +4.0%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Spark-Ignition Reciprocating Or Rotary Internal Combustion Piston Engines For Aircraft

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of spark-ignition reciprocating or rotary internal combustion piston engines for aircraft, when their volume increased by 26% to 56K units. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 84% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 115K units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of global imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aircraft internal combustion engine imports reduced to $1.9B in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild reduction. Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+54.1%), Spain (+34.1%), Free Zones (+30.4%), Singapore (+16.9%), Canada (+13.6%), Brazil (+11.6%), China (+10.4%), Italy (+6.3%), Germany (+5.0%) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +54.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-10.4%) and the UK (-18.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United States (+20 p.p.), Free Zones (+7.1 p.p.), Canada (+4.6 p.p.), Spain (+4.3 p.p.), Oman (+3.2 p.p.), Singapore (+2.5 p.p.), Brazil (+2.4 p.p.) and Italy (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while South Africa and the UK saw its share reduced by -4% and -27.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Singapore ($387M) constitutes the largest market for imported spark-ignition reciprocating or rotary internal combustion piston engines for aircraft worldwide, comprising 21% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($82M), with a 4.4% share of global imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 4.4% share.

In Singapore, aircraft internal combustion engine imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+29.6% per year) and the United States (-4.1% per year).

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($218,836 per unit), while Free Zones ($1,303 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Exports

From 2012 to 2022, the share of Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Oman increased by +24, +3.5 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($497M), Thailand ($447M) and Oman ($209M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 47% share of global exports.

Oman, with a CAGR of +37.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average aircraft internal combustion engine export price stood at $7,002 per unit in 2022, surging by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 95%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $17,350 per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($22,554 per unit), while Saudi Arabia ($1,729 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+7.7%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
