Banana and Plantain Price in Hong Kong SAR (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average banana and plantain import price amounted to $848 per ton, picking up by 6.2% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 11% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $893 per ton. From January 2023 to September 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($925 per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($520 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average banana and plantain export price stood at $1,082 per ton in 2022, growing by 1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 81% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Macao SAR ($1,084 per ton), while the average price for exports to China totaled $996 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+12.0%).
Banana and Plantain Imports in Hong Kong SAR
For the third consecutive year, Hong Kong SAR recorded decline in purchases abroad of bananas and plantains, which decreased by -13.4% to 55K tons in 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt curtailment. The smallest decline of -2.7% was in 2020.
In value terms, banana and plantain imports declined to $46M in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 1% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $54M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
