The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2022 were Turkey (36K tons), China (34K tons) and the United States (26K tons), together comprising 36% of global consumption. India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Germany, Bangladesh, Canada and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +45.1%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest base metal hook markets worldwide were the United States ($427M), Turkey ($363M) and Japan ($244M), with a combined 38% share of the global market.

Global production peaked at 364K tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, base metal hook production rose slightly to $3B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. China (135K tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of base metal hook production, comprising approx. 47% of total volume. Moreover, base metal hook production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (35K tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (24K tons), with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in China totaled -4.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+11.4% per year) and the United States (+10.3% per year).

In 2022, the amount of base metal hooks, eyes and eyelets imported worldwide stood at 116K tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. Overall, total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.9% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, base metal hook imports fell to $927M in 2022. In 2022, Myanmar (19K tons), distantly followed by Greece (6.9K tons), Vietnam (6.5K tons) and Indonesia (6.2K tons) represented the main importers of base metal hooks, eyes and eyelets, together comprising 34% of total imports. Bangladesh (5K tons), India (4.9K tons), France (3.4K tons), Cambodia (3K tons), Belgium (3K tons), China (2.8K tons), Germany (2.8K tons), Malaysia (2.6K tons) and Italy (2.5K tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to base metal hook imports into Myanmar stood at +45.1%. At the same time, Greece (+59.6%), Belgium (+18.8%), Malaysia (+15.4%), Cambodia (+15.0%), France (+10.0%), India (+8.8%), Vietnam (+7.9%), Bangladesh (+7.4%), Italy (+6.8%), Indonesia (+3.6%) and Germany (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Greece emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +59.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, China (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Myanmar (+16 p.p.), Greece (+5.8 p.p.), Belgium (+1.8 p.p.) and Cambodia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-4.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest base metal hook importing markets worldwide were Vietnam ($136M), Indonesia ($74M) and China ($61M), together comprising 29% of global imports. Bangladesh, Italy, France, Cambodia, India, Greece, Germany, Myanmar, Malaysia and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

Among the main importing countries, Greece, with a CAGR of +39.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average base metal hook import price amounted to $7,987 per ton, reducing by -5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $10,057 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($21,713 per ton), while Myanmar ($716 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

World Exports of Base Metal Hooks, Eyes And Eyelets

In 2022, global exports of base metal hooks, eyes and eyelets skyrocketed to 142K tons, picking up by 16% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at 165K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, base metal hook exports soared to $1.6B in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +77.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports By Country

China dominates exports structure, finishing at 104K tons, which was near 73% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Greece (6.5K tons), generating a 4.6% share of total exports. The following exporters - Taiwan (Chinese) (3.8K tons), South Korea (3.6K tons), Germany (3.2K tons), Vietnam (2.6K tons), Austria (2.5K tons) and Hong Kong SAR (2.3K tons) - together made up 13% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to base metal hook exports from China stood at -2.8%. At the same time, Greece (+86.6%), Vietnam (+33.2%), Austria (+24.5%), Germany (+4.2%) and South Korea (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Greece emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +86.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-4.2%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Greece (+4.6 p.p.), Vietnam (+1.8 p.p.) and Austria (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Taiwan (Chinese) (-1.8 p.p.) and China (-10.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($1.1B) remains the largest base metal hook supplier worldwide, comprising 71% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($72M), with a 4.5% share of global exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 4% share.

In China, base metal hook exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+0.6% per year) and South Korea (+3.1% per year).

Export Prices By Country

The average base metal hook export price stood at $11,271 per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. In general, export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, base metal hook export price increased by +50.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 26%. The global export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($31,171 per ton), while Austria ($3,657 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
