Consumption

World Consumption of Unwrougt and Powder Beryllium

For the fifth year in a row, the global market recorded decline in consumption of unwrougt and powder beryllium, which decreased by -0.1% to 5.2K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a perceptible contraction. As a result, consumption reached the peak volume of 8.8K tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the global consumption remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The global beryllium market revenue reached $595M in 2022, flattening at the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $737M. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the global market remained at a lower figure.

Consumption By Country

The United States (3.2K tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of beryllium consumption, accounting for 62% of total volume. Moreover, beryllium consumption in the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, China (1.3K tons), threefold. Mozambique (178 tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with a 3.4% share.

In the United States, beryllium consumption shrank by an average annual rate of -5.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+2.4% per year) and Mozambique (+8.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($334M) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($139M). It was followed by Mozambique.

In China, the beryllium market expanded at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of market growth: the United States (-5.3% per year) and Mozambique (+9.9% per year).

The countries with the highest levels of beryllium per capita consumption in 2022 were the United States (9.7 kg per 1000 persons), Mozambique (5.4 kg per 1000 persons) and Madagascar (4.8 kg per 1000 persons).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of consumption, amongst the leading consuming countries, was attained by Madagascar (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Production

World Production of Unwrougt and Powder Beryllium

In 2022, production of unwrougt and powder beryllium decreased by less than 0.1% to 5.2K tons, falling for the eighth year in a row after three years of growth. In general, production continues to indicate a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 16%. As a result, production reached the peak volume of 8.8K tons. From 2015 to 2022, global production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, beryllium production expanded markedly to $870M in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 161%. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $966M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

The United States (3.3K tons) remains the largest beryllium producing country worldwide, accounting for 62% of total volume. Moreover, beryllium production in the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, China (1.3K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mozambique (178 tons), with a 3.4% share.

Imports

World Imports of Unwrougt and Powder Beryllium

In 2022, purchases abroad of unwrougt and powder beryllium was finally on the rise to reach 45 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at 68 tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, beryllium imports skyrocketed to $16M in 2022. In general, imports posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 265%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports By Country

China was the major importer of unwrougt and powder beryllium in the world, with the volume of imports finishing at 17 tons, which was near 37% of total imports in 2022. France (8.1 tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Hungary (6.3 tons) and India (5.4 tons). All these countries together took near 44% share of total imports. Argentina (1.7 tons), Malaysia (1.4 tons) and Russia (1.2 tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +24.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+51.2%), Argentina (+28.9%), Malaysia (+28.1%), France (+25.6%), Russia (+15.0%) and Hungary (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +51.2% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China, France, India, Hungary, Argentina, Malaysia and Russia increased by +35, +17, +12, +9.1, +3.7, +3 and +2.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($13M) constitutes the largest market for imported unwrougt and powder beryllium worldwide, comprising 83% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($1.2M), with a 7.2% share of global imports. It was followed by France, with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled +30.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+22.8% per year) and France (+25.7% per year).

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average beryllium import price amounted to $362,475 per ton, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 412% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $366,874 per ton in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($954,011 per ton), while Hungary ($9,907 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+6.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

World Exports of Unwrougt and Powder Beryllium

For the third year in a row, the global market recorded growth in overseas shipments of unwrougt and powder beryllium, which increased by 74% to 58 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 596% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 101 tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the global exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, beryllium exports soared to $18M in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports By Country

Kazakhstan (29 tons) and the United States (26 tons) prevails in exports structure, together mixing up 97% of total exports. Nigeria (942 kg) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +34.1%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($17M) remains the largest beryllium supplier worldwide, comprising 91% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($1.1M), with a 5.8% share of global exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan totaled +14.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+1.6% per year) and Nigeria (+12.0% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average beryllium export price amounted to $318,812 per ton, declining by -21.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 717% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $455,976 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($572,672 per ton), while the United States ($40,627 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+3.0%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
