World Consumption of Carbon Brushes

China (16K tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of carbon brush consumption, comprising approx. 27% of total volume. Moreover, carbon brush consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, India (6.4K tons), twofold. The United States (4.4K tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with a 7.6% share.
In China, carbon brush consumption increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: India (+4.1% per year) and the United States (-3.1% per year).
In value terms, China ($409M), the United States ($300M) and India ($147M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2022, together accounting for 39% of the global market. Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Turkey, Germany, Russia, Spain, Italy, Indonesia and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.
Among the main consuming countries, Mexico, with a CAGR of +11.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of market size over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The countries with the highest levels of carbon brush per capita consumption in 2022 were Spain (30 kg per 1000 persons), Russia (22 kg per 1000 persons) and Germany (22 kg per 1000 persons).

World Production of Carbon Brushes
In 2022, the amount of carbon brushes produced worldwide declined modestly to 53K tons, approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. Global production peaked at 55K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, carbon brush production shrank to $2B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $2.2B. From 2015 to 2022, global production growth failed to regain momentum.
Production By Country
China (18K tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of carbon brush production, accounting for 34% of total volume. Moreover, carbon brush production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (5.6K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (3.5K tons), with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China amounted to +4.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+5.3% per year) and the United States (-4.9% per year).
Imports
World Imports of Carbon Brushes
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of carbon brushes, when their volume decreased by -37.4% to 17K tons. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at 27K tons in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, carbon brush imports reduced to $636M in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure at $735M in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports By Country
The countries with the highest levels of carbon brush imports in 2022 were the United States (1,517 tons), Indonesia (1,456 tons), Nigeria (1,341 tons), India (997 tons), China (916 tons), Mexico (812 tons), Germany (764 tons), Italy (526 tons), the Czech Republic (476 tons), Canada (443 tons), Hungary (407 tons) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (334 tons), together accounting for 59% of total import. The Philippines (299 tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Bosnia and Herzegovina (with a CAGR of +20.7%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest carbon brush importing markets worldwide were China ($73M), the United States ($55M) and Germany ($45M), together accounting for 27% of global imports. Mexico, India, Italy, the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Canada, Hungary, the Philippines, Nigeria and Bosnia and Herzegovina lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.
Among the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +21.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
In 2022, the average carbon brush import price amounted to $37,543 per ton, jumping by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $40,457 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($79,561 per ton), while Nigeria ($4,314 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+11.7%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports
World Exports of Carbon Brushes
Global carbon brush exports contracted to 12K tons in 2022, dropping by -9.4% compared with the year before. In general, exports showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at 15K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, carbon brush exports shrank to $650M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 17%. The global exports peaked at $741M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports By Country
China represented the main exporting country with an export of about 3.1K tons, which finished at 26% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Japan (1,065 tons), Germany (1,057 tons), Hungary (786 tons), Thailand (757 tons), the United States (650 tons) and Austria (611 tons), together comprising a 42% share of total exports. The following exporters - Italy (503 tons), Mexico (376 tons), South Korea (365 tons), Romania (229 tons), Canada (199 tons) and France (196 tons) - together made up 16% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to carbon brush exports from China stood at +2.8%. At the same time, Romania (+30.0%), South Korea (+6.1%) and Thailand (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +30.0% from 2012-2022. Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Japan (-1.4%), France (-1.7%), Hungary (-4.7%), the United States (-4.9%), Germany (-7.0%), Italy (-7.7%), Austria (-8.3%) and Mexico (-10.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+11 p.p.), Thailand (+3.5 p.p.), Romania (+1.8 p.p.) and South Korea (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the United States, Hungary, Italy, Austria, Mexico and Germany saw its share reduced by -1.5%, -1.7%, -3.1%, -4.3%, -4.5% and -5.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($103M), China ($83M) and the United States ($63M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 38% share of global exports. Japan, Hungary, Austria, Thailand, France, Italy, Mexico, South Korea, Romania and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +25.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices By Country
The average carbon brush export price stood at $54,991 per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($123,856 per ton), while China ($27,256 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
