Clay Price in Ireland (CIF) - 2022

The average clay import price stood at $522 per ton in 2022, picking up by 4.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 213%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $675 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,092 per ton), while the price for Cyprus ($172 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Clay Price in Ireland (FOB) - 2022

The average clay export price stood at $1,760 per ton in 2022, reducing by -7.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,894 per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($2,698 per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($963 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+128.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Clay Imports in Ireland

In 2022, approx. 14K tons of clays were imported into Ireland; falling by -11.4% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 18%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 16K tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, clay imports dropped to $7.3M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $7.9M, and then fell in the following year.

Clay Exports in Ireland

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of clays, when their volume decreased by -13.3% to 377 tons. Over the period under review, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +33.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 435 tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, clay exports dropped markedly to $664K in 2022. In general, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +31.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $824K, and then declined markedly in the following year.
