China (5.8B units) constituted the country with the largest volume of coloured pencil lead production, accounting for 73% of total volume. India (409M units) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5.2% share.

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average coloured pencil lead import price amounted to $9.8 per thousand units, falling by -29.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $14 per thousand units, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure at 8.4B units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coloured pencil lead exports reached $85M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 15%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $105M. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the global exports failed to regain momentum.

China dominates exports structure, recording 4.9B units, which was approx. 67% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by India (644M units), creating an 8.8% share of total exports. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +24.9% from 2012-2022. Vietnam and Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-3.1%) and Mexico (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+10 p.p.) and India (+7.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Germany (-1.5 p.p.) and Mexico (-2.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($29M) remains the largest coloured pencil lead supplier worldwide, comprising 34% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($14M), with a 16% share of global exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 13% share.
