Frozen Whole Fish Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average frozen whole fish import price amounted to $4,535 per ton, declining by -8.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2022 when the average import price increased by 13% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $6,276 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Australia ($12,329 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($1,804 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Frozen Whole Fish Price in Japan (FOB) - 2023
In July 2023, the average frozen whole fish export price amounted to $1,706 per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a moderate increase from July 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.4% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, frozen whole fish export price increased by +44.1% against April 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 30% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $1,987 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to July 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($1,941 per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($654 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Frozen Whole Fish Imports in Japan
In 2022, the amount of frozen whole fish imported into Japan reduced to 581K tons, declining by -10.7% on the previous year. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 651K tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, frozen whole fish imports expanded slightly to $3.2B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 4.2%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 421K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, frozen whole fish exports reduced to $474M in 2022. Overall, exports showed a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 11%.
