The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Global production peaked at 772K units in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray production declined slightly to $8.2B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 5.4% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $8.6B in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were the UK (325K units), China (237K units) and Malaysia (34K units), together accounting for 81% of global production.

World Imports of Non-Medical X-Rays

Global non-medical x-ray imports skyrocketed to 237K units in 2022, growing by 27% against the previous year's figure. In general, total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -23.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 96%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at 311K units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray imports skyrocketed to $3.5B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports By Country

The UK was the major importing country with an import of around 97K units, which amounted to 41% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (16K units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by China (11K units). All these countries together held approx. 11% share of total imports. The following importers - Thailand (9.9K units), Spain (9K units), the United States (8.6K units), South Korea (5.9K units), the Philippines (4.3K units), Italy (4K units), Germany (4K units), the United Arab Emirates (3.8K units) and Malaysia (3.6K units) - together made up 22% of total imports.

The UK experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of non-medical x-rays. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+30.1%), the Philippines (+14.9%), Thailand (+13.7%), the United Arab Emirates (+12.0%), China (+7.3%), South Korea (+6.0%), Germany (+4.9%) and Italy (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +30.1% from 2012-2022. Spain and the United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Taiwan (Chinese) (+6.3 p.p.), Thailand (+2.7 p.p.) and China (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the UK saw its share reduced by -8.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest non-medical x-ray importing markets worldwide were China ($751M), Taiwan (Chinese) ($444M) and the United States ($344M), with a combined 45% share of global imports.

Among the main importing countries, Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +28.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average non-medical x-ray import price amounted to $14,575 per unit, shrinking by -7.7% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, non-medical x-ray import price increased by +66.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 80%. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($69,577 per unit), while the UK ($715 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+5.5%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

World Exports of Non-Medical X-Rays

In 2022, shipments abroad of non-medical x-rays increased by 5.5% to 200K units, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 14%. The global exports peaked at 281K units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray exports totaled $3B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports By Country

The UK was the largest exporting country with an export of around 76K units, which resulted at 38% of total exports. Malaysia (19K units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by China (19K units), the United States (16K units) and Germany (11K units). All these countries together took near 33% share of total exports. The following exporters - Italy (8.6K units), Japan (8.5K units) and the Czech Republic (8K units) - each accounted for a 13% share of total exports.

Exports from the UK decreased at an average annual rate of -9.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+40.8%), Italy (+10.8%), China (+7.0%), Malaysia (+6.3%) and Japan (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +40.8% from 2012-2022. The United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China, Malaysia, the Czech Republic, Italy, the United States and Japan increased by +6, +6, +3.9, +3.2, +2.8 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest non-medical x-ray supplying countries worldwide were Germany ($487M), the United States ($412M) and China ($354M), with a combined 41% share of global exports. Japan, the UK, Malaysia, Italy and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Among the main exporting countries, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +33.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average non-medical x-ray export price amounted to $15,185 per unit, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, non-medical x-ray export price decreased by -19.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $18,774 per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($44,333 per unit), while the UK ($3,493 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
