Onion and Shallot Price in India (FOB) - 2023
The average onion and shallot export price stood at $242 per ton in September 2023, flattening at the previous month. Overall, the export price showed slight growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 when the average export price increased by 22% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $275 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to September 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($392 per ton), while the average price for exports to Nepal ($186 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Onion and Shallot Price in India (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average onion and shallot import price amounted to $495 per ton, dropping by -5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 28%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $523 per ton, and then dropped in the following year.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Afghanistan.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Malaysia amounted to +31.2% per year.
Onion and Shallot Exports in India
In 2022, overseas shipments of onion and shallot were finally on the rise to reach 2.1M tons after two years of decline. Overall, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
