In value terms, Italy ($966M), Japan ($756M) and the United States ($656M) were the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2022, with a combined 30% share of the global market. China, India, Germany, France, the UK, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mexico and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Overall, production, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak volume of 526M square meters. From 2015 to 2022, global production growth failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, patent leather production totaled $7.8B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 17%. Global production peaked at $12.8B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Italy (70M square meters), China (59M square meters) and the United States (38M square meters), with a combined 44% share of global production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +2.9%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

Spain (428K square meters) held a little share of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($21 per square meter), while Chile ($3.1 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

South Korea (2.4M square meters) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by China (4.9%) and Vietnam (4.5%). In value terms, Italy ($213M) remains the largest patent leather supplier worldwide, comprising 65% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($33M), with a 10% share of global exports. It was followed by China, with a 3.1% share.

In Italy, patent leather exports declined by an average annual rate of -3.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (-7.9% per year) and China (+5.3% per year).

Export Prices By Country

The average patent leather export price stood at $19 per square meter in 2022, shrinking by -2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 37% against the previous year.
