Price for Butter and Dairy Spreads in South Africa (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average butter and dairy spreads import price amounted to $5,354 per ton, surging by 12% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, butter and dairy spreads import price increased by +25.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 57%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $5,479 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($23,098 per ton), while the price for Ireland ($4,791 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+17.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Price for Butter and Dairy Spreads in South Africa (FOB) - 2023

The average butter and dairy spreads export price stood at $4,478 per ton in July 2023, surging by 14% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 29% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $5,139 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($7,813 per ton), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($2,864 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Butter and Dairy Spreads in South Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of butter and dairy spreads decreased by -14.9% to 3.6K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 96% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 7.2K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, butter and dairy spreads imports contracted slightly to $19M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated measured growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -37.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 72% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $31M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, butter and dairy spreads exports totaled $8.7M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 11%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
