The average import price for chain and parts thereof, of iron or steel stood at $7,222 per ton in 2022, surging by 6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 327%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $38,823 per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($15,392 per ton), while the price for Serbia ($2,372 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In December 2023, the average export price for chain and parts thereof, of iron or steel amounted to $5,090 per ton, approximately equating the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 44% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $6,127 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to December 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($30,719 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($2,543 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+14.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Chain and Parts Thereof, of Iron or Steel in Hungary
In 2022, overseas purchases of chain and parts thereof, of iron or steel decreased by -3.5% to 4.8K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +15.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +52.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 40%.
In value terms, imports of chain and parts thereof, of iron or steel amounted to $36M in 2022. In general, imports showed a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 8.6% against the previous year.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 302% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 1.6K tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.
