The average export price for coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds stood at $90.9 per ton in December 2023, reducing by -10.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 when the average export price increased by 22% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $176 per ton. From March 2023 to December 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Israel ($125 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($70.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bangladesh (+0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average import price for coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds stood at $56 per ton in 2022, falling by -44.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $195 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($162 per ton), while the price for Botswana ($34 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, shipments abroad of coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds increased by 32% to 85M tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
