The average cocoa; paste, not defatted import price stood at $4,284 per ton in May 2023, growing by 1.6% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 an increase of 13% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $4,310 per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to May 2023.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Belgium ($8,073 per ton), while the price for France ($3,885 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cocoa; paste, not defatted export price stood at $4,164 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $4,368 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($12,003 per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($2,233 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+15.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Imports of Cocoa; Paste, Not Defatted in Hungary
For the fourth consecutive year, Hungary recorded growth in overseas purchases of cocoa; paste, not defatteds, which increased by 24% to 1.4K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +22.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +83.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, cocoa; paste, not defatted imports skyrocketed to $5.2M in 2022. Overall, imports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
