In January 2024, the average import price for ethylene polymers; waste, parings and scraps amounted to $333 per ton, waning by -2.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 when the average import price increased by 8.6% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $417 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to January 2024, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was Slovenia ($400 per ton), while the price for Spain ($237 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average export price for ethylene polymers; waste, parings and scraps stood at $509 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $575 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($904 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($268 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Imports of Ethylene Polymers; Waste, Parings and Scrap in Malaysia
In 2022, overseas purchases of ethylene polymers; waste, parings and scraps decreased by -20.9% to 266K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a mild increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -30.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 52%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 383K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of ethylene polymers; waste, parings and scraps fell to $118M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +19.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 71%.
