Price for Grapes; Fresh or Dried in Portugal (CIF) - 2023

The average grapes; fresh or dried import price stood at $2,061 per ton in August 2023, declining by -11.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a noticeable increase from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, grapes; fresh or dried import price decreased by -13.5% against April 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 23% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $2,403 per ton. From February 2023 to August 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($2,398 per ton) and Spain ($2,017 per ton), while the price for South Africa ($1,765 per ton) and Italy ($1,776 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In August 2023, the average grapes; fresh or dried export price amounted to $3,394 per ton, increasing by 18% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 an increase of 21% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in August 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Poland ($5,698 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($2,543 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Grapes; Fresh or Dried in Portugal

For the fourth year in a row, Portugal recorded growth in overseas purchases of grapes; fresh or drieds, which increased by 7% to 41K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, grapes; fresh or dried imports expanded to $81M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +11.1% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
