In 2022, the average import price for nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils amounted to $17,954 per ton, dropping by -25.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $30,252 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($471,787 per ton), while the price for Singapore ($1,035 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+39.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils stood at $21,891 per ton in 2022, declining by -32% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 81% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $78,385 per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($22,574 per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($1,000 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (-11.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Nickel; Plates, Sheets, Strip and Foil in Sri Lanka
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils increased by 154% to 4.6 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a perceptible increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, imports of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils surged to $83K in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight shrinkage.

Exports of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils from Sri Lanka fell to 64 kg in 2022, with a decrease of -12.3% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 192% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 73 kg, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, exports of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils shrank remarkably to $1.4K in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage.
