The average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $356 per ton in 2022, which is down by -2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 30%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $428 per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($561 per ton), while the price for Poland ($248 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

The average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $322 per ton in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 150% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $2,549 per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Equatorial Guinea ($798 per ton), while the average price for exports to Gabon ($238 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Equatorial Guinea (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds, when their volume decreased by -6.3% to 3.9K tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 14%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 4.1K tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, imports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds shrank to $1.4M in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $1.5M, and then declined in the following year.

In general, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 108%.

In value terms, exports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds contracted to $855K in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 122% against the previous year.
