Price for Wine of Fresh Grapes in Portugal (FOB) - 2023
In June 2023, the average wine of fresh grapes export price amounted to $3.2 per litre, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 when the average export price increased by 8.2% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $3.2 per litre in May 2023, and then shrank modestly in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($5.0 per litre), while the average price for exports to Guinea-Bissau ($846 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In June 2023, the average wine of fresh grapes import price amounted to $611 per thousand litres, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 11% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $0.7 per litre. From February 2023 to June 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($2.7 per litre), while the price for Spain amounted to $512 per thousand litres.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+1.6%).
Exports of Wine of Fresh Grapes in Portugal
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine), when their volume decreased by -1.1% to 324M litres. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 6.2%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at 328M litres in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, wine of fresh grapes exports dropped to $976M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $1.1B, and then contracted in the following year.

In general, imports recorded a perceptible slump. The smallest decline of -1.8% was in 2020. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 193M litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wine of fresh grapes imports rose to $172M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 4.1%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
