Price for Wood; for Fuel, Sawdust and Wood Waste and Scrap, Not Agglomerated in Sri Lanka (FOB) - 2022

The average export price for wood stood at $32 per cubic meter in 2022, flattening at the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($40 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($19 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Qatar (-0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2020, the average import price for wood amounted to $81 per cubic meter, declining by -29.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a sharp slump. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $304 per cubic meter in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($292 per cubic meter), while the price for Switzerland ($15 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2017 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+0.4%).

For the fourth consecutive year, Sri Lanka recorded growth in shipments abroad of wood, which increased by 8.7% to 38K cubic meters in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, exports of wood rose remarkably to $1.2M in 2022. Overall, exports saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 91%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
