Sugar Cane Production in China - 2022
In 2022, production of sugar cane decreased by -3.1% to 103M tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum volume at 109M tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure. Sugar cane output in China indicated a relatively flat trend pattern, which was largely conditioned by a relatively flat trend pattern of the harvested area and a modest expansion in yield figures.
In value terms, sugar cane production reached $43.3B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a strong increase from 2017 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +12.9% over the last five years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $45B in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Sugar Cane Harvested Area in China - 2022
In 2022, approx. 1.3M ha of sugar cane were harvested in China; surging by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to sugar cane production attained the peak figure at 1.4M ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.
Sugar Cane Yield in China - 2022
In 2022, the average yield of sugar cane in China shrank sharply to 80 tons per ha, dropping by -15.5% compared with the year before. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a slight increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the yield increased by 18%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of 95 tons per ha, and then fell sharply in the following year.
