Refined Palm Oil Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
The average refined palm oil import price stood at $961 per ton in September 2023, remaining constant against the previous month. In general, the import price showed a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2023 an increase of 8.9% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1,401 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($1,174 per ton), while the price for Indonesia stood at $946 per ton.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (-2.4%).
Refined Palm Oil Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average refined palm oil export price amounted to $1,119 per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 when the average export price increased by 2.6% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,345 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($1,251 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada stood at $1,116 per ton.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+0.5%).
Refined Palm Oil Imports in the United States
In 2022, approx. 1.7M tons of refined palm oil were imported into the United States; almost unchanged from 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 22%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.7M tons, leveling off in the following year.
In value terms, refined palm oil imports surged to $2.3B in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 70%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

For the fourth consecutive year, the United States recorded growth in shipments abroad of refined palm oil, which increased by 6.1% to 127K tons in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +20.1% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +73.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
