Steel Railway Material Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average steel railway material import price amounted to $5,167 per ton, which is down by -13.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 an increase of 146% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $6,168 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($36,954 per ton), while the price for Australia ($2,881 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+12.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Steel Railway Material Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average steel railway material export price amounted to $6,289 per ton, with an increase of 498% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded perceptible growth. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($28,152 per ton), while the average price for exports to Niue ($952 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+17.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Steel Railway Material Imports in New Zealand

In 2022, imports of railway material of steel into New Zealand declined significantly to 8.1K tons, with a decrease of -25.1% against 2021 figures. Overall, total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +28.6% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak of $33M, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
