Sugar Price in Brazil (FOB) - 2022
The average sugar export price stood at $394 per ton in 2022, rising by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 19%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $514 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Iran ($435 per ton) and Canada ($403 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($375 per ton) and Nigeria ($377 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Sugar Price in Brazil (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average sugar import price amounted to $1,322 per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 252% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $9,760 per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($1,507 per ton), while the price for the United States totaled $1,269 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Paraguay (+30.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Sugar Exports in Brazil
In 2022, overseas shipments of sugar decreased by -4.4% to 24M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +11.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -13.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 60% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 28M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sugar exports expanded significantly to $9.5B in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +25.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +95.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 59%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Sugar Imports in Brazil
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of sugar, when their volume decreased by -31.8% to 1.3K tons. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 90% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.9K tons, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
In value terms, sugar imports declined notably to $1.7M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 100% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $2.1M, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
