Sugar Price in Nigeria (CIF) - 2022
The average sugar import price stood at $377 per ton in 2022, dropping by -22.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $884 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Brazil.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Brazil amounted to -6.9% per year.
Sugar Price in Nigeria (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average sugar export price amounted to $400 per ton, shrinking by -41.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 201% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,928 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Niger.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Niger amounted to +7.2% per year.
Sugar Imports in Nigeria
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of sugar, when their volume decreased by -7.7% to 1.7M tons. Overall, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1.8M tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, sugar imports declined remarkably to $639M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 59%.
