Sweet Potato Price in Costa Rica (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average sweet potato export price amounted to $941 per ton, declining by -6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $1,367 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($1,471 per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($680 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Sweet Potato Price in Costa Rica (CIF) - 2022
The average sweet potato import price stood at $653 per ton in 2022, waning by -62.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 127% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $2,780 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Nicaragua.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the United States amounted to +25.9% per year.
Sweet Potato Exports in Costa Rica
For the fourth consecutive year, Costa Rica recorded growth in overseas shipments of sweet potatoes, which increased by 2% to 1.3K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, sweet potato exports shrank to $1.2M in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The smallest decline of -1.1% was in 2020.

Sweet Potato Imports in Costa Rica
In 2022, overseas purchases of sweet potatoes increased by 622% to 20 tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sweet potato imports skyrocketed to $13K in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a significant decrease.
