Consumption By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2022 were China (277M units), the United States (155M units) and Japan (69M units), together comprising 46% of global consumption. Brazil, Bangladesh, South Korea, Turkey, Germany, Mexico, the Philippines, India, Italy and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +16.8%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Bangladesh ($2B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($808M). It was followed by the United States.

Production By Country

The country with the largest volume of umbrella production was China (1.1B units), accounting for 85% of total volume. Moreover, umbrella production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Bangladesh (36M units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkey (22M units), with a 1.8% share.

In China, umbrella production plunged by an average annual rate of -1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Bangladesh (+4.3% per year) and Turkey (+3.3% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Umbrellas

In 2022, the amount of umbrellas imported worldwide soared to 768M units, picking up by 28% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Global imports peaked at 822M units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, umbrella imports skyrocketed to $3.1B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports By Country

In 2022, the United States (144M units), distantly followed by Japan (69M units), Brazil (48M units), Greece (41M units), Germany (38M units) and the Netherlands (35M units) were the major importers of umbrellas, together generating 49% of total imports. South Korea (33M units), the Philippines (23M units), Mexico (23M units), India (23M units), Italy (22M units), Spain (17M units) and France (15M units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Greece (+33.5%), India (+16.8%), the Netherlands (+11.2%) and Germany (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of the United States (+8.8 p.p.), Greece (+5.1 p.p.), the Netherlands (+3 p.p.), India (+2.4 p.p.) and Germany (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Korea (-1.9 p.p.), Brazil (-2.7 p.p.) and Japan (-3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($640M) constitutes the largest market for imported umbrellas worldwide, comprising 20% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($265M), with an 8.5% share of global imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United States stood at +3.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+4.4% per year) and Japan (-3.6% per year).

Imports By Type
