Whey Price in the Netherlands (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average whey import price amounted to $888 per ton, leveling off at the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $936 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Austria ($1,983 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($575 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Whey Price in the Netherlands (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average whey export price amounted to $1,310 per ton, surging by 3.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 8.1%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $2,035 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($2,485 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($746 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+0.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Whey Imports in the Netherlands
Whey imports into the Netherlands expanded rapidly to 547K tons in 2022, with an increase of 8.6% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, whey imports amounted to $613M in 2022. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +45.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
