The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, asbestos exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2020. In general, exports saw a sharp slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

The shipments of the three major exporters of asbestos, namely Tunisia, Congo and Senegal, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), mixing up a X% share of total exports. Morocco (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009 when the export price increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, asbestos imports expanded notably to $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, showed a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

Imports by Country

Ghana was the main importer of asbestos in Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2020. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), creating a X% share of total imports. Niger (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2020, average annual rates of growth with regard to asbestos imports into Ghana stood at +X%. At the same time, Niger (+X%) and Zimbabwe (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2020. While the share of Ghana (+X p.p.), Zimbabwe (+X p.p.) and Niger (+X p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
