In 2021, shipments abroad of illuminated signs and illuminated name-plates increased by 5.1% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 86%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, illuminated sign exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 166%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Senegal prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), achieving a 5.3% share of total exports. The following exporters - Burkina Faso (X kg), Mali (X kg) and Benin (X kg) - together made up 7.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to illuminated sign exports from Senegal stood at +3.4%. At the same time, Benin (+52.4%), Burkina Faso (+38.2%), Mali (+22.2%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+19.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +52.4% from 2012-2021. Senegal (+6.1 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.9 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+3.1 p.p.), Mali (+2 p.p.) and Benin (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest illuminated sign supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mali ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 6.8% share.

In Senegal, illuminated sign exports shrank by an average annual rate of -2.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mali (+21.9% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+12.5% per year).

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -20.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -14.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 74% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons.
