For the ninth consecutive year, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded decline in shipments abroad of fluorescent discharge lamps, which decreased by -42.9% to X units in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a precipitous contraction. The smallest decline of -1.4% was in 2014. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fluorescent discharge lamps exports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 8.5%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Mexico (X units) was the key exporter of fluorescent discharge lamps, constituting 40% of total exports. El Salvador (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Panama (X units) and Guatemala (X units). All these countries together took approx. 45% share of total exports. Brazil (X units), Barbados (X units) and Costa Rica (X units) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Mexico decreased at an average annual rate of -23.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Barbados (+41.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Barbados emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +41.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Guatemala (-12.3%), Panama (-18.5%), El Salvador (-19.8%), Costa Rica (-21.7%) and Brazil (-34.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Panama (+7.6 p.p.), El Salvador (+6.1 p.p.), Guatemala (+5.7 p.p.) and Barbados (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Mexico (-1.6 p.p.) and Brazil (-12.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest fluorescent discharge lamps supplying countries in Latin America and the Caribbean were Mexico ($X), Panama ($X) and El Salvador ($X), together comprising 72% of total exports. Barbados, Brazil, Guatemala and Costa Rica lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

Among the main exporting countries, Barbados, with a CAGR of +44.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per unit, waning by -8.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Barbados ($X per unit), while Guatemala ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Costa Rica (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, purchases abroad of fluorescent discharge lamps decreased by -14.7% to X units, falling for the eighth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 14%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fluorescent discharge lamps imports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a dramatic curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 5.8%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Brazil (X units) and Mexico (X units) represented roughly 56% of total imports in 2021. The Dominican Republic (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Panama (X units). All these countries together took approx. 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Guatemala (X units), Argentina (X units), Honduras (X units), Chile (X units), Nicaragua (X units), Colombia (X units) and El Salvador (X units) - together made up 19% of total imports.
