Exports in MERCOSUR

For the ninth year in a row, MERCOSUR recorded decline in overseas shipments of fluorescent discharge lamps, which decreased by -43.5% to X units in 2021. In general, exports saw a dramatic descent. The smallest decline of -11.8% was in 2013. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fluorescent discharge lamps exports plummeted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a precipitous setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X units) represented the largest exporter of fluorescent discharge lamps, making up 50% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X units), Chile (X units), Uruguay (X units) and Colombia (X units), together committing a 44% share of total exports. Peru (X units) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -34.0% from 2012 to 2021. Uruguay (-1.6%), Peru (-22.0%), Chile (-24.7%), Argentina (-31.0%) and Colombia (-41.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uruguay (+11 p.p.), Chile (+8.1 p.p.), Peru (+3.2 p.p.) and Argentina (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Brazil (-9 p.p.) and Colombia (-16.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest fluorescent discharge lamps supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Uruguay, with a 6.3% share.

In Brazil, fluorescent discharge lamps exports plunged by an average annual rate of -31.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Chile (-32.6% per year) and Uruguay (-7.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per unit), while Argentina ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of fluorescent discharge lamps decreased by -20.9% to X units, falling for the eighth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a dramatic contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fluorescent discharge lamps imports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a dramatic contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Brazil dominates imports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 70% of total imports in 2021. Argentina (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 7.5% share, followed by Chile (6.7%) and Colombia (5.1%). Paraguay (X units), Suriname (X units) and Ecuador (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -20.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Suriname (+7.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Suriname emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +7.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Chile (-18.1%), Paraguay (-18.1%), Colombia (-26.6%), Argentina (-27.8%) and Ecuador (-28.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+15 p.p.), Chile (+2.8 p.p.) and Suriname (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ecuador, Colombia and Argentina saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -2.8% and -5.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
