In value terms, preserved tuna exports fell slightly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Seychelles represented the key exporter of tuna (prepared or preserved) in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. Mauritius (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Madagascar (X%).

Seychelles was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tuna (prepared or preserved) exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. Madagascar (X%) and Mauritius (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Seychelles (X p.p.) and Madagascar (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of Mauritius (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

Export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. Overall, imports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved tuna imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to X% of total imports. Angola (X tons) held a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mozambique (X%). The following importers - Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved tuna imports into South Africa stood at X%. At the same time, Botswana (X%) and Mozambique (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Mauritius (X%), Namibia (X%) and Angola (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of South Africa, Mozambique and Botswana increased by X, X and X percentage points, respectively.
