Uncoated Felt Paper Exports

Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2022, shipments abroad of uncoated felt paper and paperboard decreased by -15.2% to X kg for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 751%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, uncoated felt paper exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 767%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Maldives (X kg) was the main destination for uncoated felt paper exports from Sri Lanka, with a approx. 100% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Maldives amounted to +55.2%.

In value terms, Maldives ($X) also remains the key foreign market for uncoated felt paper and paperboard exports from Sri Lanka.

Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 13,933% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X kg. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, uncoated felt paper imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports faced a sharp setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 18,811% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Hong Kong SAR (X kg) was the main supplier of uncoated felt paper to Sri Lanka, with a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, uncoated felt paper imports from Hong Kong SAR exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Hong Kong SAR stood at -8.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-12.9% per year) and Belgium (-12.8% per year).

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) constituted the largest supplier of uncoated felt paper and paperboard to Sri Lanka, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 15% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Hong Kong SAR stood at -17.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-24.7% per year) and Belgium (-21.6% per year).

In 2022, the average uncoated felt paper import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -94.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a significant decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
