The Ugandan frozen fish and seafood market contracted to $X in 2023, falling by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by X%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2023, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Uganda

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of frozen fish and seafood decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen fish and seafood exports dropped to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Portugal (X tons) was the main destination for frozen fish and seafood exports from Uganda, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, frozen fish and seafood exports to Portugal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Israel (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Romania (X tons), with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to Portugal amounted to X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Israel (X% per year) and Romania (X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for frozen fish and seafood exported from Uganda were Portugal ($X), Israel ($X) and Romania ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Romania, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average frozen fish and seafood export price stood at $X per ton in 2023, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2022, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Frozen Fish and Seafood

Imports into Uganda

In 2023, imports of frozen fish and seafood into Uganda surged to X tons, rising by X% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen fish and seafood imports soared to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Tanzania (X tons), the UK (X tons) and South Sudan (X tons) were the main suppliers of frozen fish and seafood imports to Uganda, with a combined X% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest frozen fish and seafood suppliers to Uganda were the UK ($X), Tanzania ($X) and South Sudan ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, South Sudan, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the average frozen fish and seafood import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
