Broken Rice Price in Sri Lanka (CIF) - 2022

The average broken rice import price stood at $825 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 79% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a temperate increase. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($880 per ton), while the price for Pakistan totaled $471 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average broken rice export price amounted to $1,062 per ton, rising by 58% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 60%. The export price peaked at $1,222 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($1,882 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($375 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+45.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Broken Rice Imports in Sri Lanka

In 2022, purchases abroad of broken rice decreased by 99.9% to 141 kg for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a sharp shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 145% against the previous year.

In value terms, broken rice imports reduced remarkably to $116 in 2022. In general, imports saw a significant decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 186%.

Broken Rice Exports in Sri Lanka

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of broken rice, when their volume increased by 185% to 98 tons. Overall, exports, however, recorded a precipitous setback.

In value terms, broken rice exports skyrocketed to $104K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn.
