Melon Price in Hungary (CIF) - 2023
The average melon import price stood at $1,440 per ton in August 2023, growing by 4% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a tangible expansion from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, melon import price increased by +21.0% against June 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 when the average import price increased by 40% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $1,908 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($3,040 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($666 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+10.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Melon Price in Hungary (FOB) - 2022
The average melon export price stood at $1,527 per ton in 2022, increasing by 2.1% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, melon export price increased by +87.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 48% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($1,813 per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($756 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Melon Imports in Hungary
In 2022, purchases abroad of melons decreased by -36.7% to 1.6K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 13%.
In value terms, melon imports declined significantly to $1.8M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year.
