In value terms, isolating switch production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Lesotho amounted to $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-1.4%).

Imports in SADC

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of isolating switches & make-and-break switches decreased by -5.7% to X units in 2022. In general, imports recorded a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, isolating switch imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa represented the largest importer of isolating switches & make-and-break switches in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was near 59% of total imports in 2022. Lesotho (X units) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (5.7%). Angola (X units), Zambia (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) held a little share of total imports.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported isolating switches & make-and-break switches in SADC, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lesotho ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with an 11% share.

In South Africa, isolating switch imports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lesotho (-3.2% per year) and Tanzania (-0.6% per year).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
