Spice Price in Indonesia (FOB) - 2022

The average spice export price stood at $5,403 per ton in 2022, declining by -2.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $5,553 per ton in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($9,648 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($1,882 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Spice Price in Indonesia (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average spice import price amounted to $3,849 per ton, with an increase of 62% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 64%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($8,961 per ton), while the price for Russia ($890 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Spice Exports in Indonesia

In 2022, shipments abroad of spices decreased by -13.7% to 125K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 192K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, spice exports contracted rapidly to $677M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $815M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Spice Imports in Indonesia

In 2022, spice imports into Indonesia fell slightly to 109K tons, reducing by -3.5% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 113K tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, spice imports skyrocketed to $420M in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
